Mack John's Fishing Tips

Fishing Lures for Spanish Mackerel

There are many ways to fish for mackerel. One way is to use Lures. There is a variety of

Lures to choose from. The most common is the spoon. Spoons come in different shapes and sizes and range in price from .79 cents to $6.00. Sometimes the cheapest is the best if there are allot of macks in the water, due to the sharp teeth these fish posses, you may find that 5 spoons just aren’t enough.

You will need a leader, monofilament line is best. Try to keep the leader strength between 30 and 40 lb test, anything more can affect the spoons ability to reflect light and work properly. Make sure you use Leader material only. Don’t buy a spool of regular line and try to pass it off as leader. Leader line is made specifically for that purpose, it’s spooled on a large wheel, and is more limp, it also reflects less light, which increases your chances to catch fish, and not get cut off. When tying your line and leader together, use a line to line knot, if you use a swivel you’re increasing your chances of getting cut off. If you have to use a swivel, use a black one, nothing shiny!

Cast your spoon out and let it sink to the bottom, give it one small jig and then steady retrieve the spoon till it hits the surface. Try to vary the speed of your retrieve, sometimes macks like a fast retrieve, then other times a slow retrieve works better. Water conditions like visibility play a big part in how fast you go. Also take into consideration the color of your spoon. Silver or Gold for clear water. White or multicolor work better in lower visibility.

Mackerel are a fun fish to catch, because of there speed and ability to turn on a dime at full speed, they aren’t the biggest fish out there but once you hook your first one, you wont want to stop. Have fun Fishing, and remember always look behind you before you cast, catch the fish, not the guy in back of you!
